CHARACTER INFORMATION
Character Name: Augustus Sinclair
Age: 56 (looks 40 thanks to ADAM)
Canon: Bioshock 2
Canon Point: Right before the ending sequence at Inner Persephone
Character Information:
All you need to know about this asshole
Personality:
Augustus Sinclair is defined by one dominant trait, and that is greed. Both a product of and a creator of the times that encompassed the Roaring Twenties, the Great Depression and the revelry of the Fifties, the man rose from the muddy streets of the Panama Canal with a drive for gain and obsession with wealth from such humble beginnings. By the time Bioshock takes place, Augustus was rich enough before Andrew Ryan invited him to come to Rapture and simply chose to go down there (Audio Diary: Wooden Nickels). He is driven by fortune and the desire for more, thanks in no small part to a long-buried survival instinct described. Even to those he cares about will feel second to his greed and need for more money. It must be said, of course, that Augustus is resourceful and a brilliant mind when it comes to inventions as well, as he and Dr. Gil Alexander both worked on the Vita-Chamber technology (as heard in Suchong's Audio Diary The Vita Chamber.)
Throughout Bioshock 2 (and the brief mention in the Bioshock: Rapture novel), Sinclair's presence is marked by his ability to adapt to Rapture's society but also to the Civil War brought on by Fontaine and later Atlas. He's an asshole that will mock and use people as he sees fit, and does so without much respect for titles, ranks and situation. This is seen best in the the way he refers to Andrew Ryan as Ol' Andy in some Audio Diaries. He's the sort of guy that can and will laugh at someone else's misery if he finds it amusing enough. In his world view, everyone is vulnerable, why not exploit it? In the Audio Diary Profit Coming, Profit Going and Wrong Side of the Tracks, Sinclair exploits both a swindler's ignorance by making ten times the profit from Ryan, mocking the Great Chain, as well as using the slums in Pauper's Drop to get rent and booze money over at the Sinclair Spirits (Referenced in the removed audio diary Sinclair Deluxe & Sinclair Spirits). Sinclair is a big believer in looking out only for himself, and considers altruism to be hypocritical. Hell, his canon death was carried out in the name of altruism, thanks to Sofia's drive for a communal knowledge. If he sees someone as expendable, one can be sure they will be tossed aside for something better, like the experimental Sinclair Solutions Consumer Rewards Program, a testing ground to see which Plasmids were the most effective in use.
After seeing his grandfather drown performing the Greater Good (as detailed by the Audio Diary Private Interests, in the Cult of Rapture website), Gus rejected altruism as a boy and understood that, even from that young age, that the only actions worth doing are for the self. He doesn't outright condemn those who are giving but he will mock them for their poor choices. This is best seen in the almost condescending tone he takes when Subject Delta when he spares the Little Sister in the Good Father route down in Ryan Amusement Park. What do you call a man that tells a Big Daddy that he has the option to harvest a child in their first encounter? Sinclair is legendarily ruthless in his pursuit of his goals and he cheerily makes no claims to have any sort of morals to hold him down. He built a prison to house Ryan's political opponents then rented them out for scientific experiments (as detailed in the Audio Diary Selling Ryan Short). That's cold.
All that said, should anyone gain Sinclair's respect, it's a boon as he will cooperate with that individual's plans. He will cultivate that trust though the free market doesn't allow for weaknesses. He is what Fontaine would have been if he hadn't tried to go all world-domination. He is not completely heartless and can learn to trust people, as he did for Delta and Eleanor. He even gave his life for those two. Those he trusts have in turn an ally in their time of need…so long as it doesn't interfere with his own survival. Delta and Eleanor were the exception to the norm and ironically cost him his own life while he was at it. Should he arrive at the peninsula, it's back to square one and he will not hesitate to do what needs to be done to make sure he stays alive.

Revision: Additional Character Trait (Positive) - Affable: If there are any saving graces to this greedy bastard, one of them would be his affable and approachable demeanor throughout the game and the Audio Diaries. Because he doesn't hide his faults under the veneer of sophistication or moral high ground, Sinclair is a lively conversation and business partner. Those who have done business with him (and don't try to outsmart him) find that what you see is what you get. With Delta, he engages in a mostly one-sided conversation with the Big Daddy and even admits to his part in the conversion of an innocent man who stumbled into Rapture. Note that he never actually lies to anyone in Subject Delta's journey. In fact, he's honest about who he is, what he's done, and only expresses regret and remorse in two occasions: that Johnny Topside was turned into Delta and that he built the Persephone Facility.
Son, I built this place, an' I did rent you out to those Plasmid Trials at Fontaine. An' now now I'm paying for it. Wish I had time to make amends... I — take the lifeboat, it's all yours, just don't leave me like this.
